Jack Marris on the beach with his camera and his dog

Behind The Lens

Jack had always wanted to photograph the picturesque village of Shieldaig and its famous Island, nestled amongst the Torridon hills at the end of the coast road from Applecross. He wanted the elevation of an aerial photograph that would include everything the spectacular view offers us.

Every successful photo taken on the drone requires meticulous planning and this was no exception. One of the most important things to consider is the flying restrictions for drones - they must never be more than 120m (400ft) from the closest point of the earth’s surface so it is important to consider what altitude you will be at when you reach the right angle for the picture. It can be quite tricky to prepare drone/camera for flying and on this particular evening, the midges were out in full-force, making it even more challenging to set up. As the drone took off, the down draft was bliss, until got too high to offer relief from them!

From studying map after map, Jack found this small lochan on a nearby hillside with its own island, almost a mirror of Shieldaig Island! He waited until August to get this shot because the sun sets at the top of the loch, allowing everything to be lit with golden light.

Our Frames

Although our canvases can stand alone as finished pieces for your wall we also add various styles of frame to increase their impact. We like to use local materials with an interesting story and a strong link to the landscape.
