In 2012, during the rut season, Jack aimed to capture an image of a stag in the beautiful evening light in Applecross. This was the first year he was in Applecross before the Gallery had opened in 2015. He would finish work at five o'clock and rush up the hillside, hoping to get a sunset photo. However, as the days grew shorter, Jack struggled to get the perfect shot before darkness fell. The rut was in full swing, and the stags were fiercely defending their hinds, making it challenging to get close enough for a good photo.

Frustrated but determined, he decided to give it one last try. As the sun began to set, Jack thought he might have missed his chance, feeling the light was fading too quickly. Instead of focusing solely on the photograph, he decided to enjoy the beautiful sunset from the ridge.

Unbeknownst to Jack, the stag he had been trying to photograph was moving around the ridge as well. In a fortunate turn of events, the stag appeared just as Jack was about to give up. The stag emerged silhouetted against the sky, perfectly framed by the fading light. This unexpected moment resulted in a stunning silhouette shot, different from what Jack had originally planned, but ultimately more striking.
