Story Behind The Lens

Jack chose Càrn Mòr Dearg for its unique perspective on the UK's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. He wanted to focus on the magnificent north face of Ben Nevis, viewing it from an opposite angle. While Càrn Mòr Dearg often sits in the shadow of its famous neighbor, Jack appreciated it as a remarkable peak in its own right—one that would be far more celebrated if located elsewhere. The route up Càrn Mòr Dearg and beyond to Ben Nevis is an adrenaline-filled climb, offering breathtaking views. The name Càrn Mòr Dearg, meaning 'giant red peak,' is a fitting description when you see the mountain from below.
He had originally planned to capture the image at sunrise, but a low-lying cloud delayed his plans until after 1 p.m. You can never be 100% sure that you’ll get the image you intend to, but after hours of fog, he was worried and frustrated that he would leave the mountain with nothing. Despite the change of conditions, he found that the afternoon light highlighted the steep ridges leading up to Ben Nevis, and the resulting image portrays the true scale and grandeur, something not fully appreciated from the more common ascent.
