The Story Behind The Lens
Jack photographed this dunlin from Eilean Fladday, a small tidal island off Raasay, which lies to the west of Applecross, between Applecross and Skye. Once home to a bustling crofting community of over 50 people in the early 1900s, the island was abandoned by the last family in 1965 but plenty of people walk or paddle there each year. Jack kayaked over to Eilean Fladday in June 2013 and camped overnight. The evening was breathtakingly calm, with the still water creating a perfect reflection that made it feel as though he was paddling through the sky.
However, camping on Eilean Fladday wasn’t entirely idyllic. The midges were relentless, and Jack vividly recalls the discomfort of trying to eat dinner while battling the tiny pests. Despite this, he managed to capture the dunlin fluttering around his campsite. The tranquil, golden hues of the sunset beautifully complemented the serene shot of the dunlin, though the peaceful image belied the less-than-peaceful camping experience Jack had.
