Story Behind The Lens
Jack had been waiting for a long time to capture an aurora in Applecross, and it just happened to be on Burns Night – which he finds quite poetic. Rabbie Burns was immensely fond of the Highlands, and his poem ‘My Heart’s in the Highlands’ is a testament to the rugged beauty that surrounds us here.
This was a very clear night, with a big, bright supermoon – so bright that he didn’t even need a head torch to walk up the hillside. This meant that there was a lot more detail provided for the landscape itself, which is unusual for an aurora image. Luckily though, the aurora itself was strong.
Auroras are often hard to capture on the West Coast because it's always so wet/cloudy/both this time of year. But all of his planning aligned and paid off!
You can see clear reflections of the green hues dancing on the surface of the water, as well as the warm lights from the houses of Milton, contrasting with the snowy hilltop. If you look closely, the stars are also bright enough to be reflected too.
